213 Austin 8 Pedal Car (1946)
In May 1946 Austin chairman Leonard Lord called together a team of three to discuss his idea of building an Austin pedal car. Lord wanted it to look like the real thing, be suitable for 7 to 11 year olds with working headlamps, horn, brakes an opening boot and bonnet to have a dummy engine and a dash board with working switches.
The team led by Alfred Ash set about their task with great secrecy in a disused building within the Longridge plant. Ash had a daughter at the time and she became the model for the template made from cardboard with moving joints to test dimensions.
Eventually this prototype emerged, based on an Austin Eight of the time. Christened JOY 1 this was the only prototype model before being redesigned as the J40 pedal car which was put into mass production in a purpose built factory in Bargoed, South Wales employing invalided ex miners

The National Automotive and Truck Museum in Auburn, IN (NATMUS) has these amazing pedal cars on display. The highlights are the dozen or so handmade miniatures (yes!!.. completely handmade by a local craftsman in Auburn!)..Dusenbergs, Cords and of course…Auburn miniatures. As you view these photos, take note of the incredible detailing and the amazing accuracy of the body parts. The hood ornaments, lights, grills, bumpers are simply stunning in their effect.
These have been for sale in the past, but the maker does not do many anymore, so getting one of them would be rare. They were priced from $5,000 to $10,000 each…and you can see why.
